Obituary for Theresa Beatrice Stevens

My Mother, Theresa Beatrice (Collings) Stevens died peacefully with her family present, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton on Saturday evening November 30th, 2019. Theresa was born on August 20th, 1927, daughter of the late James and Beatrice (Doherty) Collings. My Father, the late John E. (Jack) Stevens died July 17th, 2012.

Theresa was predeceased by her brothers–in–law, Vernon Melvin, James Stevens, Bill Woodruff, Peter McNulty, and her sisters–in–law, Ann Melvin, Audrey Collings and niece Patricia Stevens.

Mom is survived by myself, Mary Ann Stevens, my husband Geoffrey Harding, her grandsons, Christopher Harding, Halifax NS, Mark (Molly) Harding, Guelph Ont. and her great granddaughter Margaret (Maggie) Harding. And her sisters Colletta Woodruff, Quispamsis, Gertrude McNulty, Belleville Ont. and her brother Leo Collings, Hampton.

My Mother, Theresa was very proud of her extended family of Nieces and Nephews: Sandra McNeill (Quispamsis), Kathie Rodger (Belleisle), Trudy Melvin (Belleisle) Louise McCarville (Fredericton), Maura Butko (Ottawa), Susan Rourke (Hampton), Elizabeth Collings (Hampton), Maria Arsenault (Saint John), Terry Tuck (Kelowna) Joan Lowney (Quispamsis), Theresa Pridham (Quispamsis), Peggy MacCharles (Oakville), Mary Arsenault (Mississauga), Louise Reesor (Toronto), Margaret Flewelling (Saint John) Bob Melvin (Belleisle), Jim Collings (Hampton), Jim Melvin (Rothesay), Peter Collings (Saint John), Wayne McNulty (Cambridge), and Jim Stevens (Markham).

My Mom, Theresa grew up in Saint John and married Jack in 1950 moving to their adoptive community of Chatham (Miramichi). She enjoyed being involved in supporting Jack (Canadian Tire) Stevens, in many community activities and politics. Mom became a Brownie leader and participated in the Catholic Women’s League. Baseball was Mom and Dad’s sport of introduction followed by a mutual love of golf and hosting social events. Canadian Tire advancements took our family to Moncton (Riverview) and Saint John (Rothesay).

My Mother was a caregiver to my elders. Her own Mother Beatrice, her mother in law Irene and Jack’s aunt Christina. Mom gave her time and energy to the New Brunswick Association of Community Living, volunteering locally, provincially and nationally.

Mom’s love of friendships was exemplary. She had an ability to organize wonderful parties wherever she was, from a cottage on the Miramichi, poolside on Allison Drive, on the deck in Florida or on the lawn of Low Wood. Mom was a legendary hostess for the “9ners”at the Riverside Golf Course!

Even through the challenges of Alzheimer’s, my Mother’s gracious social skills and desire for organization made her a poster woman for Shannex Parkland, becoming an accomplished bowler at the age of 90. Mom attended all types of events, concerts, church services. Mom made an effort with new residents of Concorde Hall to make them feel welcome. It was important to her that those around her felt valued, respected and included.

My Mom would want to thank all of those who cared for her, thank her family and friends for their visits and her church volunteers who faithfully visited her.

My family and I will celebrate Mom’s life by visitation Wednesday, December 11th, 2019 at the Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 15 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis from 4 to 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, December 12th ,2019 at 11 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 31 Gondola Point Road in Rothesay, NB Interment to take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Saint John in warm weather.

For those who wish, remembrances may be made to NB Association of Community Living or a charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be made at www.kennebecasisfh.com
