Obituary for Gail Patricia Searles

It is with broken hearts that the family of Gail Patricia Searles (née Dunlap) announce her passing on December 4th, 2019, at the age of 75. Gail was born in Fredericton on February 28th, 1944. She was the daughter of the late James and Clarice (Gallant) Dunlap.

Gail was predeceased by her husband (and high–school sweetheart), Ronald Searles, and their infant daughter, Nancy Gail Searles.

Gail leaves behind her daughter, Andrea Bower (Shawn) of Fredericton; her son Gregory Searles (Tara) of Saint John; her beloved grandchildren Katie and Will Bower and Frederick and Georgia Searles; her chosen sister Jean Stevenson (Jim) and chosen niece Cherylann Gordon of Kingston, Ont.

Gail graduated from Fredericton High School in 1962, before attending Fredericton Business College. Before and after her years as the best stay–at–home mom ever, Gail worked secretarial positions with various companies, including the province of New Brunswick, the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital, and, for most of her career, as a school secretary with former District 18. Gail retired in 2003 from Park Street Elementary School, where she absolutely loved working and where she formed many life–long friendships. Gail and her late husband, Ron, loved traveling. Many of Ron’s business trips allowed them to see destinations around the world, and they continued their love of travel well after their retirements. They particularly enjoyed many winter trips to Florida in retirement, where they both enjoyed spring training baseball. Gail was a Red Sox fan, and Ron a Blue Jays fan, which created a (mainly friendly) rivalry between them over their 49–year marriage.

Gail had many interests and hobbies. She loved live theatre, cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, and reading into the wee hours (John Grisham being her favorite author). Her hobbies became passions over the years. Her love of Trivial Pursuit transformed into regular games’ nights with close friends, and her love of walking lead her to the Wednesday Walkers group. Her love of cooking and entertaining became a passion, and she and Ron formed a Gourmet Club that lasted more than 20 years. This offered the opportunity for Gail to research and experiment with new recipes, as well as decorate and create gorgeous, themed place–settings in her home. Her love of crafting and sewing began at a young age, when Gail would often sew her own clothing, including her own silk wedding gown and matching coat for a beautiful New Year’s Eve wedding. Gail was part of an incredibly special and inseparable group of friends known as the Crafts Group, who have met every Monday for more than 40 years. Gail and this group of friends have created many beautiful things together, especially quilts in most recent years. Gail took this love of quilting on as another passion, becoming a member of the Elm City Quilting Guild. She always looked forward to their annual quilting retreat at the Villa Madonna. The Crafts Group has been an integral part of Gail’s life, and an extension of her family in every way.

Gail’s favorite place in the world was at her and Ron’s cottage at Harvey Lake. She enjoyed the community, the tranquility, and the opportunity to welcome family and friends to this very special spot on the water. Sunsets there are too special for words, and she never missed one, glass of wine in hand, on the deck with family and friends. Gail was a loving, free spirit, always up for new experiences and fun. Because of this, it was her request to not have a traditional funeral, but rather a gathering for family and friends to enjoy some music, good food, drinks and laughs over fond memories.

Friends and family of Gail are invited to Kingswood Lodge, on Monday, December 9th, from 6pm until the last person leaves, to celebrate a life well–lived.

The family would like to thank York Care Centre for their care and support, and McAdam’s Funeral home for helping with arrangements. Internment will take place in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery Extension at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of NB, York Care Foundation, or to a charity of the donor’s choice. On–line condolences may be made at www.mcadamsfh.com
