Obituary for Evelyn Cooper

With heavy hearts, and gratitude for a long life well lived, the family of Evelyn Cooper announces her passing, which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, December 5th, 2019. Evelyn was born in Apohaqui, NB on March 24th, 1932; a daughter of the late James “Stewart” and Mabel (Alcorn) Gregg, and the loving wife of the late Stewart Clinton Cooper.

Evelyn graduated from Sussex High School in 1949, and moved to Saint John where she attended the Saint John School of Nursing, graduating in 1953. She then married S. Clinton Cooper on her 24th birthday in 1956, and worked in the Neurology department at the General Hospital, while raising her family. She later left the General to work at Rocmaura, retiring with Clinton in 1989, and they spent many winters in Florida. She would later return to Rocmaura in the early 1990’s, working part time. Evelyn loved camping at Town and Country, loved the flea market, and Sunday dinners with her family. She was a resident of Topeka Street for over 40 years, and was a very active supporter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and canvassed for them for many years.

Celebrating her life are her children; son Ron (Sherry), daughters Sandra Cooper and Karen Smith (Mike), as well as grandchildren Ashley and Matthew Cooper, along with several nieces and nephews, and her beloved cat, Kitty. In addition to her husband, and her parents, Evelyn was pre-deceased by sisters-in-law and their spouses; Gladys and Darrell Moore, as well as Dorren and Fred Brueton.

Evelyn’s family would like to thank the nurses, doctors, and staff of the Palliative Care unit at the Regional Hospital for their care and compassion during Evelyn’s time with them.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424), where the family invites you to join them for a celebration of Evelyn’s life on Wednesday, December 11th from 12 to 1:30 p.m. A private family interment will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens.

For those who wish, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Saint John SPCA would be greatly appreciated.
