Obituary for Barbara Ann DeLay

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Mother and Nana, Barbara Ann DeLay formally of Rothesay, which occurred December 8, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Montreal, Quebec on August 11, 1933 to the late Violet Foster (née Duncan) and Herbert Wilfred Dick. Barbara grew up in Charlottetown, Woodstock and Heartland and entered the nursing profession at age seventeen in Saint John. She graduated from Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. After graduation, you could find Barbara hard at work under the brass dome of the Saint John General Hospital. In later years, Barbara worked at Saint John Regional Hospital in various departments. Barbara had the gift of nursing and was always there to help someone in need. She was a proud Saint John Regional Hospital Alumni, Catholic Women’s League member and Alto choral singer.

In 1956, Barbara married her husband, Edward Michael DeLay. They had ten beautiful children together. Special memories were Sunday dinners with the family. Barbara loved to travel and spent many winters in Florida, Spain and cruising in the Caribbean. Her contagious smile, courageous spirit and captivating stories will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A devoted daughter, wife, mother, nana and great–nana to her family and to others, she has left this world a better place and her legacy will live on in those lives that she touched.

Celebrating her life are her children Michael (Pam) DeLay, Rothesay; Ann (Vahid) Kahnamelli, Coquitlam, B.C.; James DeLay, Calgary; Catherine (Michael) Guyette, Toronto; Mary (Glenn) Miller, Ottawa; John DeLay, Saint John; Patricia (Michael) King, Quispamsis; Joan (Michael) Cormier, Grand–Barachois; and Jennifer (Owen) Boyle, Saint John; brother Stuart (Rose Marie) Dick, Ottawa; brother–in–law William (Valerie) DeLay, Calgary; 23 precious grandchildren and two great–grandchildren; nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Barbara was predeceased by her infant son, Gerard, and daughter–in–law Roseann.

Barbara’s family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Your love and support made the unit feel like a home away from home.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646–2424) with visitation on Friday, December 13 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 31 Gondola Point Rd, Rothesay on Saturday December 14, 2019 at 11 a.m. It will be followed by a reception. Private family burial will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery at a later date.

Donations in Barbara’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice. To send a message of condolence please visit www.fundyfuneralhome.com
