Obituary for Herbert “Bruce” Smith

It is with great sadness that the family of Herbert “Bruce” Smith announce his unexpected passing on December 15, 2019 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Bruce was born in Saint John, NB on September 1, 1945 to the late Herbert H. and Reta V. (Johnston) Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Norma (Doull), sister Linda A. Smith, Saint John, NB and brother-in-law Cyril Wood, Ladner, BC; nieces, Suzan Wood Young, Kelowna, BC and Stephanie Wood, Ladner, BC and their families; his favorite cousin, Lois MacKinnon and cousins, Judy Gaunce and Jackie Johnston, all of Miramichi, NB; and godson, Kris Phillips (Veronique) of Ottawa, ON.

He was predeceased by his parents, sister Sandra Wood, and in-laws, Edith and Murray Doull and all of his aunts and uncles.

Bruce spent his entire life living on Bayside Drive (except for 1 year) in the family home. He worked in the Engine Rebuilding Division of Universal Sales, starting as an engine mechanic and ending up in Management, retiring in 2001. He loved anything he could do with his hands and read constantly on how things worked and would try just about anything and accomplish it. He was an Amateur Radio Operator (VE1ANH) for over 47 years, woodturner, boater and gardener as well as a lifelong member of Park Avenue United Church (Harmony) where in later years he enjoyed singing in the choir.

The “CAMP” at Erb’s Cove was his pride and joy and where Norma and Bruce spent over 34 years enjoying their summer activities and neighbours.

In keeping with Bruce’s wishes, there will be no visitation. There will be a funeral service at Fundy Funeral Home Chapel (230 Westmorland Road) on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception there. A private family burial at Ocean View Memorial Gardens will take place later.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances made to Harmony United Church, Saint John SPCA or Cardiac Rehab Program- SJRH would be appreciated. To place an online condolence, please visit www.fundyfuneralhome.com
