Obituary for Lorraine Hughes

With sadness, the family of Lorraine Hughes announces her passing on the evening of December 27, 2019 at the age of 86.

She leaves behind her beloved and devoted husband of 65 years, Frank, her daughter Christie (Tom Aves), son Ritchie (Janet Reid) and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Reverend Holly Knight and an infant daughter.

Lorraine was born in Saint John on November 18, 1933, the daughter of Holland and Grace Knight. After graduating from Saint John Vocational School, she raised a family, carried out survey work for Statistics Canada and worked as an administrative assistant for the school board, the Provincial Laboratory and Charles Martin Petroleum Inspectors. Lorraine was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary and served on the Chancel Guild and the Vestry of St. Mary and St. Bartholomew’s Church.

Lorraine delighted in children and in her pet Dachshunds. She sang frequently and with joy. She enjoyed craft work, especially needlepoint, knitting and was an accomplished quilter. She used these talents making items for craft fairs at the church and for knitting finger puppets for children for the SJRH auxiliary. She took great pleasure in sewing and gifting handmade baby quilts to new parents. Lorraine enjoyed traveling, especially to the US for shopping trips, but was happiest when spending summers at the family camp on Washademoak Lake.

Lorraine’s gentle and thoughtful nature, playfulness and twinkling eyes were gifts to all who knew her.

We would like to express our deep gratitude to the wonderful staff of The Village for their compassionate dedication to Lorraine’s care and comfort over the past three and a half years.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). In keeping with Lorraine’s wishes, there will be no visitation. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on January 2, 2020 from St. Mary and St. Bartholomew’s Church, 646 Westmorland Road with reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery.

For those who wish, remembrances may be made to a charity of donor’s choice and online condolences can be placed at www.brenansfh.com
