Obituary for Johannes Theodore Laaper

April 25, 1950 –January 8, 2020
It is with great sadness that the family of Ted Laaper announces the passing of their beloved husband, father and grandfather. Ted died at the Saint John Regional Hospital at 69 years of age after battling cancer.

He was born in Utrecht, Netherlands as one of 13 children. He came to Canada at the age of 20 to fulfill a dream of seeing the Redwood trees, which he did. In addition he stayed, married, and fathered three children and eventually was grandfather to four grandchildren.

When first in Canada, he lived near his brothers and sisters in Ontario but eventually moved to New Brunswick by his brother Michael in Fredericton. He married Lillian, his bride of 44 years and became father to Deborah, Joanne and Judy. He was known as a humorous, opinioned Dutchman who deeply loved his family. He was also known as the big, tall teddy bear. As a carpenter he would be known in most hardware and building supply stores in Fredericton. He loved being a part of Brunswick St. Baptist Church as well as the water view and wonderful neighbors of Vesey Road.

He is predeceased by his parents, Bastiaan and Maria Elisabeth (Geerlings) Laaper, brothers Johannes, Willem, Arnold, and Bas.

He is survived by his wife Lilian; his three daughters Deborah Lutes (friend Duane Lutes), Joanne Cox (Tim), and Judy Laaper (Bernie MacDonald); four grandchildren Abram, Liam, Maria and Rachel Lutes; siblings Mary VanBeek, Mike Laaper (Lee), Hanneke Bellkom (Piet), Aart Laaper (Bernadette), Joe Laaper (Bertie), Agnes VerKroost (Henk), Frank Laaper (Francis) and Hein Laaper (Yuri) as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada, Holland and New Zealand.

There will be a visitation at McAdam’s Funeral Home on Sunday, January 12, 2020 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at Brunswick Street Baptist Church on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Operation Smile Canada would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be made at www.mcadamsfh.com.
