Obituary for Charles Hubbard

The death of Charles Isaac Hubbard husband of Patricia (Johnstone) Hubbard of Red Bank, NB, occurred on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at his late residence at the age of 79. Born in Newcastle, NB, he was the son of the late Earl and Abigail (Blackmore) Hubbard.

Charles Isaac Hubbard, PC (Queen’s Privy Council of Canada) CD (Canadian Forces Decoration) is a current member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He is a former member of the House of Commons of Canada, representing the riding of Miramichi, New Brunswick from 1993 to 2008. Charles is a former school principal. He is a former Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport during the government of Paul Martin.

In 1961, Major Charles Hubbard graduated from the Royal Canadian School of Infantry and served briefly with Canadian Guards in Germany and later as a platoon officer, quartermaster, adjutant, company commander and Deputy commander of 2nd Royal New Brunswick Regiment (NS).

Charles has a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in History and Economics, and continued with a Master of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Education degree.

In 1963, he began his career at Harkins High School in Newcastle and also taught at North and South Esk Regional High School in Sunny Corner, New Brunswick. He was the first principal of Miramichi Valley High School. He was also a member of the New Brunswick Teachers Association, the Principals Council, National Association of Secondary School Principals and MARTA.
Charles was an active member of St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, Sunny Corner, NB, as well as serving on the Board of Managers and as Treasurer of the Cemetery Committee. He was also an active member of his community, he has been deeply involved in many community organizations. This included some 17 years as a Director and President of Northumberland Cooperative Dairy Ltd. and Newcastle Rotary Club.

Charles had a love for the outdoors which included farming and fishing.
Besides his wife: Patricia, Charles is survived by: one daughter: Lesley Anne Jardine (Michael) of Red Bank, NB; three sons: Calvin of Halcomb, NB; David of Red Bank, NB; John (Jessica Toonders-Hubbard) of Ottawa, ON; three grandchildren: Mark, Ruth and Liam; one nephew: Bryan (Stephanie) and one niece: Barbara Croft (Richard) as well as several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents: Charles was predeceased by: his brother and sister-in-law: Daniel and Louise (Holt) Hubbard.

The family will receive visitors at Bell’s Funeral Home, 651 King George Highway, Miramichi on Saturday, February 15, 2020 from 7 to 9 PM and again on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The Funeral Service will be held from St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, Sunny Corner, NB on Monday, February 17, 2020 at 2 PM with Rev. Dr. Martin Kreplin and Pastor Tom Ettinger officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Cemetery later in the spring.
