Obituary for Paul Clancy

Our family is sad to announce the passing of our son and brother Paul Leonard Clancy on February 10. Paul was born October 9, 1954, the fourth child and fourth son to Betty and the late Billy Clancy. Paul was a happy child with an easy smile, outgoing personality, and a sparkle in his eyes.

Paul attended school in Chatham. He was a member of the first graduating class from James M. Hill High School and was the first Student Council President. He had the honour of having 1 as his student card number. In high school, Paul was the manager/trainer of the hockey and soccer teams. After high school, Paul attended the University of New Brunswick and Dalhousie University where he received his bachelor’s degree. Paul ventured to Edmonton, Alberta where he worked until he heeded the call of the Miramichi and returned to Chatham to work for UPM until his retirement.

Paul was a people person. He would talk to anyone he met and by the time the conversation was over, he would know who they were related to, where they worked, and what they liked to do.

Paul was a much sought after and appreciated cook. He prepared gourmet meals for his mother and family, who were rarely inclined to eat elsewhere. When asked for his recipes, Paul would respond, “I added some of this and a pinch of that until I liked the taste.”

Paul loved to fish, golf and play softball, especially when it was with his family and friends. He spent many hours fly fishing on the Miramichi River. When he caught a salmon, he prepared it to perfection to be shared with those around.

Paul was delighted when family gathered around to watch Jeopardy. The rule was, don’t talk unless you are answering the question. Of course, Paul answered the most questions. When asked how he could know so many answers, he would reply “I just know.”

Paul also enjoyed watching sports, especially curling, football, hockey, baseball and golf. If ever there was an armchair expert, it was Paul. He sure loved to tell the curlers or players, the plays they should have or should not have made.

Above all, Paul loved his family. Paul knew all his relatives and how they were connected. He had a special connection to his many cousins and could tell you a story about any one of them. This connection was evident during the recent trip to Las Vegas where 22 people gathered to celebrate his 65th birthday. Paul had many friends. If you were Paul’s friend, you were his friend for life.

Paul loved babies and children. Each of his nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces were a treasure to him, and gave him love, laughter and an insight into youth. He was godfather to Alexis, Brendan, Chris and Brian.

Paul is survived by his mother, Betty Clancy, and his siblings; Ken (Mary), Joe (Patty), Bill (Janet), Beth (Bill), Barb, Lourdes (Mike), Carmel (Pat), Donald, and Kathleen (Daryl). Paul will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews; Dana, Erin, Danny, Julie, Matt, Terry, Kyla, Theresa, Brendan, Jonathan, Kathlin, Chris L., Kristen, Chris F., Brian, Katie, Pat, Liam, Kathleen, Rianna, Carleen, Madison, Ryan and Alexis, and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Paul is also survived by his aunts, Lourdes Connell and Louise Werstiuk.

Beside his father, Billy Clancy, Paul was predeceased by his nephews Geoff Gallant and Jerimiah Frank, grandparents, uncles and aunts.

Paul’s family would like to thank the oncology, extra-mural and hospice teams who provided care to him over the last few years. They not only met his medical needs; but, gave compassion, hugs and support. Also we would like to thank our neighbours and friends who dropped off food.

Funeral mass for Paul will take place at St. Michael's Basilica, on Friday, February 14, 2020 at 11:00 am, with Father Dass officiating. Funeral arrangements are with Maher’s Funeral Home, 35 University Ave, Miramichi (506-773-4321).

Memorial donations can be made to Hospice Miramichi, the Jerimiah Frank memorial fund or a charity of your choosing.
