Obituary for Francis Dunn

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of the love of our lives at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was the son of the late Michael and Elizabeth (McNeil) Dunn and the wonderful, loving husband of Kathleen.

He is survived by his six children, Frank (Michelle) of Halifax, NS, Phillip (Veronica) of Hong Kong, Patti Lynn (Michael Grabham) of Seattle, USA, James (Lisa) of New Maryland, NB, Shauna (Dean) Figler of Fredericton, NB and Stephen (Michelle) of Fredericton, NB. He will be missed by his eleven grandchildren, Matthew, Bethany and Ryan Dunn of Halifax, Courtney, Brandon and Joshua Figler of Fredericton, Taylor, Alex and Sam Dunn of New Maryland, Liam and Ella Dunn of Fredericton; three great-granddaughter, Maiya, Sydney and Winnie; brothers, Anthony Dunn of Cape Breton and Joey Dunn of Shediac, NB as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers and three sisters.

Francis graduated from high school in Cape Breton and then joined the R.C.A.P. for four years and was given an honourable discharge. He graduated from Junior College in Cape Breton and attended Saint Francis Xavier University. After his education, he joined the banking business and worked in it for thirty years. Upon retirement, he worked as a Financial Consultant for Investor’s Group for five years, then went as a Planned Giving Officer for U.N.B. for the next ten years. He was also a Councillor for the Village of New Maryland, NB later becoming Mayor for three terms, retiring in 2014.

Frank was a man of strong faith and was involved in many aspects of his church and community. He was a Lector, President of Parish Council, member of the Knights of Columbus, a Youth Group Leader, a Council Leader and many more faith related works.

He received many awards including: Citizen of the Year (while living in Cape Breton), The Queen’s Jubilee Medal, The Laura Breau Award from the municipalities of NB and several banking awards. Also, he was involved with the Muriel McQueen Foundation, Home and School Association.

Frank was also a firm believer in higher education and as a result, his six children are all university graduates, each holding at least two degrees.

He loved to golf, curl, skate and enjoy his children. He had a great love for all children and always said it was easier to get involved in their sports like, baseball, hockey and Boy Scouts than just dropping them off.

Frank and his lovely wife, Kathleen “Kaye” were married for 60 years and lived in New Maryland for thirty-four years. They were a wonderful couple and worked together in all facets of their lives and loved each other dearly. They were a couple who worked together with their children, community and church.

Many many thanks to Drs, Nurses, LPNs and staff of Thomas Hall, Shannex. Also, thank you to Dr. Barry for all the times he looked after Frank.

Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home on Friday, February 21, 2020 from 5 to 8 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Sts. John and Paul Catholic Church, New Maryland, on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 12 pm noon. Interment will take place at a later date in the Hermitage Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Frank’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. Online remembrances may be left at www.mcadamsfh.com
