Obituary for Winston "Peter" Steeves

1945 - 2020
Winston "Peter" Steeves, 75, of Moncton, NB, died in hospital on February 20, 2020, from complications arising from Corticobasal Degeneration. Born in St. John’s, NL, in 1945, Peter was the son of the late Winston and Audrey Steeves.

After receiving his civil engineering diploma, Peter worked for a year for Stanley W. Emmerson Architect in Saint John, NB, before joining Modern Construction, the family firm, as a quantity surveyor. In mid-life, Peter left Modern to study property appraisal, and then joined the management team at School District 15 with responsibility for properties and maintenance staff. In this role, Peter’s gifts as a manager blossomed as he demonstrated a knack for leadership and innovation, and a deep empathy for the people who worked with him.

In retirement, he turned his attention to various personal projects, but none so important to him as grandfatherhood. He instilled in his children and grandchildren a great love of nature, and was nowhere more at home than he was at his cottage in Main River, NB, and its nearby backroads and trout streams. Peter was an active member of the Uplands Baptist Church and volunteered in many capacities both at his church and in the community.

He is survived by his loving and much-loved wife of 52 years, Linda Marie (Card) Steeves; by his daughter Brenda (Kevin) Berry of Hillsborough, NB; by his son Winston ‘Andrew’ (Karen) Steeves of Black River Lake, NS; his son James (Elizabeth) Steeves of Hamilton, ON; by his son John (Jennifer) Steeves of Moncton, NB; and by his 12 grandchildren: Adam, Ryan, Audrey, Jared, Joseph, Nathan, William, Ben, Simon, Ella, Ava, and Maya.

May he be remembered as a man who valued kindness and practiced it liberally.

A service of remembrance will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday February 24 at Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 330 Whitepine Road, Riverview (869-2007).

Instead of flowers, donations may be made to Harvest House Shelter and Community Centre.
