Obituary for Fred Herkert

It is with saddened hearts that the family of Fred W. Herkert announces his passing on February 17, 2020. He was born in Hettingen, Germany on December 15, 1934 to the late Josef and Frieda (Jenninger) Herkert.

Fred will be sadly missed by his children Christine and Fred (Pam) and his grandchildren Ashley, Brittany and Tyler.

In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife Rita of 60 years.

Fred immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1957. He was a stone mason by trade but was also a very skilled craftsman in woodworking. In 1958, on a visit to Germany, he met the love of his life, Rita. They married in 1960 and lived in Belleville, Ontario where Fred enjoyed construction work and bricklaying.

In 1966, they moved to Fredericton to continue in the construction industry. In 1967, he incorporated StarLite Homes Ltd., building numerous homes in the Fredericton area and later creating Star-Lite Village, Lake Herkert, and Eaglewood Village. Fred’s motto was: The key to success is doing the little things right. Fred was loved and respected by family, friends and the business community.

In his retirement he enjoyed his woodworking projects, his yearly southern cruises, and spending time at his camp in Currieburg, NB where he would hunt, relax and enjoy the beauty of the trees and nature. Recently, he shared his love of cooking his special German dishes with his grandchildren as well as many stories from his youth.

He generously supported numerous charities including the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to name a few.

At the request of the family, there will be no public visitation. A funeral mass will take place at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on Monday, February 24, 2020 at 12:05pm with Fr. Maria officiating. A private interment will take place at a later date at the Forest Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick or to the charity of choice. Online condolences may be made at www.mcadamsfh.com
