Obituary for James Thorne

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of James Niven Thorne at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on February 20, 2020, following a brief illness. Born in the family home on August 4, 1923, he lived his entire 96 years on the family homestead in Cambridge Narrows, NB.

Niven is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Joyce (Chapman) Thorne; three sons, Neil (Debbie), Nelson (Roberta), and Noel (Stacey); grandchildren, Nickolas, Bradley, Samantha, and Scott; sister, Dorothy Farris; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Butler and Alice (Tolley) Thorne and brothers, William, Ernest and Walter.

Dad worked as a farm labourer, sawyer, and then for the Department of Transportation for 23 years until his retirement in 1985. He had a long and happy retirement and took special pleasure in maintaining a large vegetable garden for many years. Right up until his passing he took great pride in keeping his property tidy and his lawn mown to within an inch of its life. He cut and split his own firewood into his late 80's. Niven was an avid hunter and passed his skills and love of the outdoors down to his three boys.

Visitation will be held at Oromocto Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago St., on Sunday, February 23, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. A memorial service will be held from the funeral home chapel on Monday, February 24, at 2:00 pm with Pastor Chris Price officiating. Inurnment will take place in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Niven's memory can be made to the Diabetes Association or a charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences can be made at www.oromoctofh.com.
