Obituary for Lionel Nowlan

Lionel Joseph Nowlan, 102, of Moncton, passed away peacefully, on Monday, March 16th, 2020, surrounded by his family, at the Veterans’ Health Centre. Born in Saint-Anne-de-Kent on July 25th 1917, he was the son of the late Jack and Justine (Richard) Nowlan. He was married to the late Yvonne in 1941.

During WWII, Lionel served with the RCAF, stationed in Jarvis, Ontario as a Leading Aircraftman (LAC). Following the war, he owned and operated a White Rose service station on Main Street, then worked as a machinist with CN, retiring in 1981. In his retirement years, he enjoyed working on cars.

Lionel was a life member of the Christ-Roi Golden Age Club, Knights of Columbus and Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 6. He was an avid bowler and card player, and loved playing Auction 45 with his buddies at the Golden Age Club. He and Yvonne were also Goldstar Ballroom and Latin dancers.

Lionel is survived by his daughters, Rosina Nowlan, Hélène Nowlan and Jacqueline Ermen (Craig), all of Moncton and Germaine Hingst (Irvin) of Calgary, AB and son, Roger (Caroline) of Moncton; daughter-in-law, Bernice Nowlan and son-in-law, Emery Leger; grandchildren, Natalie (Louise), Chantal (Mark), Nicole (Tyler), Marc, Luc, Ashley (Cody), and Michelle (Michael); great-granddaughter, Michelle and sister, Germaine DeRoy (Claude), two sisters-in-law Rita Nowlan and Alice Nowlan; brother-in-law, Freddie Cormier (Francis), and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Lionel was predeceased by his wife, Yvonne (Cormier) Nowlan (2011); daughter, Géraldine Leger and son, John; brothers, Odilon, Aurèle, Arthur, Réné, Roméo, Aldori, Arsène, and Gérard.

A heartfelt thank you to the Staff of 4E of the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont University Hospital and especially the staff and volunteers of Veterans’ Health Centre for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Lionel and his family during his stay.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) with visitation hours and a Funeral Mass with date and times to be announced (delayed due to COVID-19).

Donations in Lionel’s memory to Harvest House or a memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated. Online condolences for the family may be shared on Fergusons Funeral Home Facebook page or at www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com
