Obituary for Larry Lewis

Larry  Lewis
Mr. Larry Lewis passed away Friday, December 23, 2016 in Tyler, at the age of 81. He was born Saturday, March 9, 1935 in Judson, Texas to the late Irwin Lewis and Annie Hammonds Lewis.
An outstanding athlete he was a football letterman in 1956 and 1957 and a track and field letterman 1957 1958 for Sam Houston State University. He set a Lone Star Conference record with a 9.5 100-yard dash in track and field and was a running back for the undefeated 1956 Lone Star Conference and Refrigerator Bowl champions.
Coach Lewis, as he was called by most, was a longtime coach, teacher and principal for Mineola I.S.D. He was a member of the Mineola Lions Club and a former alderman for the Mineola City Counsel. He had a deep love for community, a great passion for the outdoors and always strived to put others before himself.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ann Lewis on June 4, 2010; by one son, Randall Don Lewis and three brothers, David, Milfred and Farrar Lewis.
Survivors include sons; Steve Lewis and his wife Mary of Longview and Darrell and his wife Wendy of Phoenix, Arizona; sister, Carol Anne Lewis Pauli of Quitman; daughter-in-law, Susie Lewis of San Antonio; three grandchildren, Lacey Lane Rowan, SSgt. Joseph Lewis and Katie Ann Lewis; five great grandchildren, Rori, Remi, Joshua, Jackson and Jude.
Funeral services are set for 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Mineola with Dr Mark Neeley officiating. Interment will follow at New Providence Cemetery in Longview. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
