Edward Roys Curley died at home on February 27, 2017. He was 85. Mr. Curley was born in Latham and had lived in Schenectady since 1959. He was the son of the late Christopher and Gwendolyn (Roys) Curley and brother of the late Ruth Curley Green and Christine Curley.

Mr. Curley leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Meyer Curley, and his children, Edward Roys Curley II (wife Ana) of Fort Pierce, Fla.; Elizabeth Anne Curley of Niskayuna, N.Y.; Christopher Robert Curley (wife Brenda) of DeKalb Junction, N.Y.; and Michael Brooks of Los Angeles, Calif., who was like a son to him. His grandchildren are Patrick, Christopher, Alyssa, Ross, Catherine, and Collin Curley, Amanda Curley Marano (husband Franco), Richard Glasby, Joseph Glasby (wife Laila), and Anthony and Kevin Nunez. He was the great-grandpa of Hayden, Briot, Bhrea, Lincoln, Dax, Joseph, Rosa, and Aria.

Mr. Curley graduated from Watervliet High School as a valedictorian and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Architecture. He was an officer on active duty in Korea from 1955 to 1957 with the 24th Infantry Division 3rd Battalion Combat Engineers.

Mr. Curley was a New York state employee, beginning his government career in the State Architect’s Office in 1957. In 1964 he was appointed associate architect in the Capital Planning Office of the Department of Mental Hygiene and served as director of Community Facilities Planning for the Department of Mental Hygiene from 1967 until his retirement in 1989. During his tenure as director, his office administered major programs of development and construction of community facilities for the disabled, for which the office received numerous awards. He also served as the department’s representative on the state Council on Architecture and on the state Education Department Committee on Vocational Rehabilitation.
Mr. Curley was a member of the Mental Hygiene Golf League as well as several art and historic associations. He served on the Schenectady Historic Commission and was part-owner and president of Hullets Island View Marina at Hullets Landing, Lake George, for 22 years.

Mr. Curley was an accomplished water colorist. He was interested in American history, particularly concerning World War II. He also renovated houses for his family. His greatest pleasures were his family and Lake George where he enjoyed boating, camping, a marina business, and remodeling his summer home at Huletts Landing with the help of his loving family, turning it into a gathering place for beautiful memories.

Visiting hours are Thursday, March 2nd , from 4 p.m.–7 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home. 1503 Union St.,(at McClellan St.), in Schenectady. The funeral will be Friday, March 3rd , at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with interment at Memory Gardens in Colonie. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Salvation Army.
