At Shoppingtown in the late 1960s, before it was a mall, my mother and I had just bought my father a birthday present, a new overcoat. It was a big expense for her at the time, but my father needed one. As we were walking, a women on crutches coming the other way slipped and fell. Mom THREW the box with coat off to the side, ran to the woman while yelling, “Let me help you! Let me help you!!” With spectators looking on, little 5’2” Dotty proceeded to hoist the woman back on her feet, straightening and brushing off her coat. Even though it happened so quickly, I knew this was important because she threw the box with the expensive coat in it. Under normal circumstances you could not have made her do something she would have considered so irresponsible. After she made sure the woman was OK, we went home. I never heard her talk about it again. But it was one of the most heroic, beautiful acts I’d ever seen anyone do.
