My Uncle Vic was a man of integrity and honor. His was a neo chivalry fading now with the light of day. He honored God, family and country; although three were but one in his spirit. So many memories I do not know where to begin. By the hour I was born, this man had witnessed the rage of war. He set the bar for our generation and it was high. Uncle Vic understood the past because it became present as he hoped for the future. He taught me not to understand the past, is to forever remain a child and one cannot grow. He loved discussing history with me and his knowledge and command of this science was beyond reproach. American history was his favorite. How I loved sitting on his porch drinking coffee, listening to his jokes and defining the various battles then and now. He particularly loved the American Revolution and Civil War. We shared books and magazines and memories we both shared in common. In his last moments I shared a revelation about his past that I know would have made his heart leap. You see, as a researcher, I found his relative born with Elizabeth Jane Jackson, half sister to Thomas Jackson better known as Stonewall Jackson. He is his 4x great uncle. A great and honorable General who had the unfortunate situation of being on the losing side. The Old Guard is being buried today. The Greatest Generation is going home, the trials are over, the pain no longer there but the memories, ah yes, the memories have made them immortal to our mortal coil. No doubt in my mind he heard early morning on April 3rd, "Bar kaoum" "Son Arise" "Well done, come I have prepared a feast for you, I will place rings on your fingers and bring you new robes for today heaven rejoices.
