The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Joyce Zap can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Taking Care of Our Child

Mark and I tried to be of help with the youth group in the Presbyterian church so one year Bob Zap asked Mark and me to go with him to be adult leaders on a backpack “camp” up the south fork of the Ruidoso River in NM. We agreed and Joyce agreed to keep a young Matt for the few days we would be gone.

Matt enjoyed being with the Zap kids, but evidently he came down with a cold or a runny nose or some such aliment. So Joyce decided to give him a home remedy of a small amount of whiskey and honey mixed together. She mixed it up and called him to come take it… but he was probably too busy playing, so it was a while before he actually came to take the “medicine.” I’m pretty sure Matt was surprised when he drank a shot of whiskey, because the honey had all settled to the bottom of the glass!

It was also surprising to me because (being raised a good Southern Baptist) I had no idea that the preacher’s wife would choose that particular remedy. We laughed over that event for many years and I’ll always remember Joyce and Bob for their kindness and love for children and their congregation.
RIP good friend.                                                                                                                           Jan Wallace
