Obituary for John Atz

John  Atz
John Atz, 88, passed away July 21, 2017 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on April 17, 1929 in Okahumpka, Florida to Asterly and Fannie Rhynes-Atz.

John was an intensely proud graduate of the University of Florida and served his country as a US Army seargent in the Korean War. He joined the State Farm Insurance company as an underwriter, culminating in important leadership roles in the Southeastern Regional Office. John was fortunate to meet Gladys Clark on a blind date in 1962, which led to a nearly 55 year partnership in marriage.

John loved his sports, his church, and his family. He enjoyed cheering for all sports realted to Gator Nation, and could frequently be found enjoying the local dog tracks. He was a prominent member of the Arlington Chrsitian Church for over 50 years serving as a permanent greeter for the last few years. Wherever he went he could be heard bragging about his twin boys and their families. John was also a very active volunteer at the food pantry sponsored by the Arlington Community Services.

John is survived by his wife Gladys (Happy) twin sons Andy Atz (Teresa) and John Atz (Lisa) and grandchildren David, Josh, Drew, Erin, and Jonathan.

Family will receive friends on Monday, July 24, 2017 at the Arlington Christian Church on 8075 Lone Star Road in Jacksonville, FL 32211 at 10:00AM. A Celebration of John's life will begin at 10:30AM with Pastor Glenn Turner officiating. Dontation in his honor can be directed to the Arlington Community Services (904) 503-8496.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery at 4535 Main Street North.
