My family and I are very pleased to have you all here today to celebrate Freddie’s life. He would be so happy to know how much you care.
I Would just like to take a few moments to talk to you about the 81 years of his life.
Freddie was born in Belfast and had 5 sisters & one brother. His dad served in the army during the Second World War.
He began working to earn his apprenticeship as a loom mechanic for an Irish linen Weaving Company.
He later worked for a major newspaper…the Belfast Telegraph as a pressman.
We met at a dance in Belfast when I was only 16.
One of my many fond memories of Freddie is while he was walking home after one of our dates (which was on the other side of town) he discovered that he still had my glasses in his pocket. He walked the whole way back and as all my family were sleeping he wrapped his tie around my glasses and gently dropped them through the mail box into the hallway so that I would have them for work the next morning. That’s when I thought he was a keeper.
We were married in 1960 and had 57 happy years together. We had 2 daughters, Eleanor & Alison.
We left Ireland for Canada 40 years ago & Freddie became a pressman for the Calgary Herald. He took an early retirement when he was 57 and worked part-time for the Calgary Stampede until we both retired in 2001.
He loved to travel & spend time with our children, grandchildren, step grandchildren & great grandchildren.
He also loved to golf was very proud of his hole-in-one at Douglasdale golf course.
Over the past 11 years Freddie struggled with dementia but he never lost his sense of humor or his big smile.
He suffered a lot this past year and we will miss him dearly but are glad to know he is at peace at last.
