Al had a great memory and he often reminded me and others of an experience he had playing with me in the Club Championships. It was about 50 years ago and Al was playing at his best and I was thrilled to be playing with him. It was on the 5th tee and I was going to make my move by trying to hit a long drive down the middle of the fairway like Al. In fact my goal was to hit it extra far past everyone in the group. A bad idea! On the tee I made a wild swing and the ball started hooking and made it's way over the 6th green and into the lake. Now dejectedly I teed up another ball and cleverly tried not to hook again but I over corrected! The second tee shot went high and right. It was a push with a slight slice and over the 3rd fairway the ball travelled and out of bounds it went by the road. I was in shock as was Al and the rest of our group. Little was said and Al just shook his head with a puzzled look. I was now forced to hit another tee shot which was my 5th stroke. My score of 9 ended my hopes of winning that day. Al has told that story to many golfers and with a laugh he would say " I never saw anything like it". Al has reminded me of that story over the years and we even laughed about it just months ago. Al made me famous in a way...in a humorous way!
