I met Nick at Olive Vista Jr. High, where we were both teachers. He knew I loved the beach and informed me he had a beach house at Paradise Cove. He invited me down to see his place, and I accepted.
When I got there, he suggested we take a walk on the beach. As he and I headed along the shore, he pointed out a large house that seemed to go on forever back to the Pacific Coast Highway. I asked him who owned it, and Nick pointed, "That guy sitting by the pool." I looked and said."That guy looks like Dick Calrk." Nick replied, "That is Dick Clark."
On the way back, he pointed at a lady standing on the front porch of anther large beach house. I said. "That looks like Julie Andrews." Nick replied, "That is Julie Andrews."
As we neared the path leading up to his home, Nick pointed to another beach house, and aksed "Who do you think lives in that place?" I questioned, "Probably Barbara Streisand?" Nick responded,"You're right! Let me show you one more place up from the Cove."
We walked about another quarter of a mile to a spot where what appeared to be a hotel was located. I looked at Nick and asked, "Who owns that mansion?" He replied, "Johnny Carson."
Back at Nick's mobile home, we drank beers poured into frosted glasses he removed from his refrigerator freezer, and we chit chatted out on his patio before we went to dinner at the Sandcastle Restaurant on the beach. We weren't movie stars, but who cares? We could enjoy the beach as much as they could. We even spurged and ordered sanddabs.
Because of Nick and Kathy sharing their place with us several times over the years, my wife, Debi, and I live in our own place at Hollwood Beach in Oxnard. Rudolph Valentino used to make movies on our beach many many years ago. Nick knew this, because he visited our place several times and said we were as lucky as he and Kathy.
Carry on in heaven, Nick.I can picture you paddling your kayak, riding your bike, and cruising in your Mustang!
