Sweet Violets (by Benny Bell)

In celebration of the life of my father, I am sharing some of his favourite music. My Dad Albert Grant MacMillan died yesterday at the age of 89 after a short stroke. Its such a shame he couldnt hang on a couple of weeks because our family was planning a get together to celebrate his 90th birthday on June 12th. Whenever I listen to Dr. Demento's programs, I think of my Dad a lot. My Dad really loved singing humorous songs of the "teasing" variety. Benny Bell would have been right up his alley! My brother Brett, a chip off the old block, liked singing Benny Bell's infamous "Shaving Cream" and Brett and youngest brother Darcy, like me were big fans of Monty Python's songs. We lost Darcy to esophageal cancer at the age of 47 on September 23, 2010 and my Mum broke her hip and succumbed to pneumonia shortly thereafter on October 31, 2010. I believe that the old teasing song "Sweet Violets" might just be my Dad's favourite of his collection of funny songs. He sang it so often that us 3 kids knew all the lyrics off by heart. Growing up in the early 60's, my parents would watch corny Mitch Miller on our tiny 19" black and white TV and 2 year old toddler Brett would stand and dance on the spot right in front of that TV with both arms around it blocking the screen! I have the photographic proof of how my little brother ruined TV watching for me while my mother told me to leave him alone cause she thought all his antics were adorable! Anyway it only seems right that I found a Mitch Miller version of the "Sweet Violets song complete with lyrics for Brett on YouTube and here it is! BTW dont be too sad for my father. He was an unrepentantly outrageous guy who LOVED getting rises out of people. With his Scottish Irish heritage, he definitely would have preferred a WAKE to a funeral. Like Dad always said: An Irishman is a Scotsman gone native, and Scotsmen are wild enough as it is! https://youtu.be/6A35rHifDG8
