Our Time At The Bronx Zoo

This is a story that likely only Ed and I knew about.

We were working at WFUV as part of the summer skeleton crew either during 1976 or 1977. We had finished anchoring the Midday Report one weekday and we would be on the air again later that day for the Evening Report. We had about three hours free until we needed to prepare for the second newscast.

We decided to go to a deli on Arthur Avenue. We took our heroes and sodas over to The Bronx Zoo. It was free in those days but there weren't many people around. We sat on a bench a short distance from a large cage that housed several big cats. We watched one animal continuoulsy pace back and forth. It walked to one end of the curved cage into a corner that was blocked from public view. It then came back out to about the halfway point of the cage before turning and repeating the process.

After about 10 minutes, we had finished our lunch and Ed suggested that we go up to the railing that separated the caged animals from the two uncaged radio knuckleheads. We decided to pace with the cat. We did this about 20 times. Though the cat went into that dark corner, we were able to time when it would come back out. We would follow it to the center of the cage and the three of us would turn together and head back in the other direction.

Then, it happened! The cat came out from behind the partition. We again timed the pace correctly, but the cat did a two-step and reversal back to the corner. Ed and I kept walking, just like in a skit from a Marx Brothers movie.

The roar of laughter rose behind us. We turned and saw that a nice sized crowd had gathered. I never will forget that wide smile on Ed's face!

I will miss you, Ed. Start gathering the copy and interviews for our next Midday Report and Evening Report together.

Forever The Bronx ~ Forever Cardinal Spellman High School ~ Forever WFUV/Fordham University. I never will forget, as a member of the bridal party for my first marriage, how you took the entire group out for ice cream before we entered the reception!

I am sorry that I cannot be with everyone on Saturday. May all of Ed's friends and family, especially Sharon, Taylor and Luke, and sister Susan and brother-in-law Robert, find peace and know how much Ed meant to so many of us.
