One of my most memorable memories with Mom was in Texas. We lived in military housing on the gulf in Corpus Cristi. I think I was about 5 years old. A tropical storm was gaining momentum. I enjoyed watching heavy rain and I still do. So I went out to the screened in porch to check it out. Suddenly lightning struck just across the street right before my eyes. It was the loudest sound I had ever heard in my life to this day. I ran into the house with my heart beating out of my chest and jumped from about three feet away and I landed in Mom’s lap and began to tremble. I wasn’t very interested in watching storms much at that point. I remember that the window was open and I remember asking Mom to close it. The next thing I remember kind of terrified me. My Mom told me that if she closed that window the house might explode. I don’t think that should something you say to a 5 year old. The best part of this story is that I was safe in Mom’s arms and nothing else mattered.
Mom always did provide a warm sense of safety.
