Obituary for Elena Groundwater

Elena Groundwater, 81, of Moncton, passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, December 6, 2019, following a brief illness. Born in Harrisville, she was the daughter of the late James and Dorothy (Hyslop) Maxwell.

Elena was a former employee of the T. Eaton Co. Ltd. and a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a Charter member of Hillside Baptist Church and was an avid hockey fan, especially the AHL Moncton teams.

Elena will be sadly missed by her sons, Ronald of Berry Mills, Ralph (Karen) of Fort McMurray, AB, Jeffrey (Julie) of Moncton, Michael (Janice) of Lutes Mountain and Darren (Jo-Anne) of Saint John; grandchildren, Ryan, Jessie, Chelsea, Jesse, Cody, Matthew, Sarah, Reid, Kenady and Brayden, Gary and Karyn; great grandchildren, Sophie, Joshua, Brody, Jakob and Adele; sisters, Marie MacLennan of Moncton, Sandra Thorne of Hevelock, Ruby Tower of Moncton, Gertrude Collins (Robert) of Montreal, PQ and Lillian Lewis of Petitcodiac; brothers, Ernest Maxwell (Dorothy) of Dieppe and Rev. Arthur Maxwell (Sherry) of Coles Island; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

In addition to her parents, Elena was predeceased by her husband, Raymond (Ray) P. Groundwater (February 2008) and sister, Muriel.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff of 3600 at The Moncton Hospital for the loving care given to Elena during her stay.

Respecting Elena’s wishes a private family only visitation will be held on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00pm. A Service to celebrate and honour Elena’s life will be held from Fergusons Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at 11:00 am. Reception in the Funeral Home Reception Centre following the service. Interment will be in Stilesville Cemetery.

In memory of Elena, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a memorial of the donor’s choice would be appreciated. Online condolences for the family may be shared on Fergusons Funeral Home Facebook page or at www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com
