I want to express my condolences to Harry's family and friends. (I had hoped to attend today, but unfortunately, encountered some car trouble)
I worked with Harry at GE, first at Lighting and later at Corporate HR. I have been a member of the OFC for the past several years, and enjoyed reconnecting with Harry and the rest of the gang at our regular lunches.
One of my favourite memories of Harry was the day it was announced to us that he was to become the new VP of HR for CGE. We were invited to a team dinner with him that evening and, as the President had driven Harry out to our offices at Royce, I offered Harry a ride in the brand new car my wife and I had just purchased.
When he got in the car, Harry pulled out a pack of cigarettes and asked "Do you mind if I smoke?" Panic set in - I was 25, just starting my career, and faced with a potential career limiting move with my brand new boss or a lifetime of wrath with my wife. I chose in favour of my marriage, and Harry gracefully accepted the decision and put away the pack of smokes.
Harry was always respectful and considerate, qualities which, in my view, made him a great leader. I will miss him at our OFC gatherings, and am grateful for having known him as a good boss, friend and role model.
