Dad trims a tree

I'm sure every daughter says that their father is the most kind, thoughtful and caring man ever but I truly believe that this was my Dad. Since his passing, I have been writing down the little things that he used to do or say that made him the unique, funny and charming person that he was. It has helped me a bit with this profound loss; however, by writing down all my memories of my Dad I realize how much I am going to miss him.

One of the funniest memories I have of my Dad is of him gardening at our home in Oakville. As some of you might know, Dad loved working in the garden and his and Mom's efforts were evident - their gardens were beautiful.

One day I was eating breakfast at the kitchen table and I looked out the window into the backyard to see my Dad begining to trim a beautiful, full and lush umbrella tree they had planted at the top of their rock garden. I assume the task was just to trim it back a bit to encourage fresh growth and as I glanced up every once and awhile from my breakfast I could see that he was trimming a bit off, and then standing back, with his head tilted to the side, examining his handiwork. This went on for at least 20 minutes.

The last time I looked up, Dad was standing back, with his hands on his hips and a satisfied look on his face, and the only thing that was left of this poor umbrella tree was a nub at the top of the trunk where the branches used to sprout from. Dad seemed very pleased with what he had accomplished but it made me laugh out loud. The poor tree! Needless to say it never recovered!

This is one of many, many stories that we used to tease him about. He always took the teasing well, knowing we did it out of love.
